Here's what we accomplished last year, thanks to our wonderful SAE families - check back to see what's coming up for the 2011-12 school year!
March Approved Mini Grants
- Registration for Tracy Kuzminsky (SAE art teacher) to attend the Georgia Art Education Association conference – $85
- Registration for 20 SAE teachers to attend the Georgia Reading conference June 7-8. This conference will train teachers on best reading strategy and writing practices. – $229x 20 teachers=$4,580
- 2 day on-site writing workshop to train all teachers—up to $3,400
- Playground enhancements to include 2 new basketball posts, backboards, and rims with lifetime guarantee, Funnel Ball post, and playground supplies for each classroom – up to $3769
February Approved Mini Grants
- Apple iPod touch 32 GB for Amber Weldon-Stephens, North Metro Music Therapist. This iPod touch will allow her to use the communication and music education Apps with her students – up to $275
- 150 book bins (30 bins per class) for the 4th grade team. Each student will be able to keep their reading notebook and books organized for Reading Workshop time – up to $750
January Approved Mini Grants
- 8 “Makala” Ukuleles for Amber Weldon-Stephens. K-5 students of Ms. Weldon-Stephens will learn to play the ukuleles culminating with a performance for the parents of the 4th and 5th grade students in the North Metro program. $277
- “TV Teacher” for Pam Dillard, K-5 Occupational Therapist. Ms. Dillard will use this writing program to teach handwriting skills to her students. $159
- 20 copies of the Book Whisperer , a book about teaching reading . Teachers will use this for training purposes and a teacher book club. $283
- Three Flip video recorders to be kept in the library for teachers to check out. They can be used for student projects and teacher use. $324
- 7 Multiplication Music cd’s for teacher use. $105
- Book baskets to be used to organize the leveled book room—up to $275
- Book boxes (4 per class) for K-2nd grade classrooms. These color coded boxes will provide organization of leveled books for student choice reading—up to $360
- 2 HP networked B&W LaserJet printers for Kathy Gross and Pam Hopkins, IRR teachers, 1 HP networked color printer for the 4th and 5th grade computer lab and various toner cartridges. $1,477
- Up to $1,300 to be used for the new PTA event called Wow Day! Funds would be used for educational speakers/guests and educational supplies.

- Latex paint for mural between 5th grade and North Metro – up to $150

- CRCT Coach practice workbooks for grades 3 and 5 –$5,908
October Approved Mini Grants
- Secret Stories classroom/teacher kit for Kathy Gross, Jaime Noel, Pam Hopkins (1st-3rd IRR teachers). This is a brain-based multi-sensory letter-sound (phonics) program to co-exist with our Saxon Phonics program. Provides classroom visual cues for reading and writing. 90 each set x 3 sets + shipping= $300
- Suzuki Tone chimes or hand bells (a 25 note chromatic set) for Mrs. Burton, SAE music teacher. Tone chimes will be used in all music classes to teach the fundamental musical concepts of melody, harmony, and tone. Tone chimes will give students the opportunities to read music, accompany, and compose. Knowledge of these concepts will be applied when students perform in choral concerts and musicals. – $1070
- HearBuilder Sequencing-Professional Edition software for Ms. Allison Rollins (Speech Therapist). This research-based and Active Board compatible software will be used to target sequencing stories or instructions from 2-6 steps. Students in grades K-5, including students in North Metro, will greatly benefit from sequencing practice, which will help to improve their functional daily living skills, as well as academics, in terms of reading comprehension and story retelling. Furthermore, this data collecting software program will be motivating to these students who enjoy working on the computer. $99.95 for 1 cd, which tracks data for an unlimited number of students.
- Frog Learning Math Games for all 3rd grade teachers. The Frog Publications Classroom Learning Games focuses on a single important skill or topic. Students can play independently, freeing teachers to work with others. (This will help with recovery.) Play any game on any game board for immense variety, 250 game combinations, all with the same simple rules. Even students at different levels can play together. Each set contains 25 different self-checking games and 10 vividly illustrated game boards. Frog Classroom Learning Games are terrific, ready-to-use learning centers that provide valuable skill reinforcement and practice activities. They are self-checking and hands-on. The third grade edition covers the following math skills: time, story problems, fractional parts, multiplication, division, computation, shapes, and more. 7 sets for each 3rd grade teacher + 1 set for special education IRR classroom @ $84.95 per set x 8 = $679.60
- IXL site license for K-5 and North Metro students. This math program can be used in school and at home to teach and practice standards. It will keep records of use, struggles, and success. License is for unlimited use for one calendar year. – $3,200
- Every Day Counts Math Partner games for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers. These games are for math practice and remediation and individual needs. There are 20 games per box or kit. – $184.60
- All kindergarten teachers to attend the Dr. Jean Seminar: Rock, Rhyme, Write & Read! Everything You Need from A to Z. This seminar correlates with the SAE School Improvement Plan and will help aid kindergarten teachers to expand upon their student engagement by utilizing Dr. Jean’s songs and activities to improve reading and writing. – $1,074 with Mrs. Richman attending free.
September Approved Mini Grants
- Premium Membership package for spellingcity.com for approximately 287 students in the following classrooms: Mrs. Harth, Mrs. Pettus, Mrs. Monico, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. Flicker, Mrs. Ingle, Mrs. Piffer, Mrs. Waldmann, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Hopkins, Mrs. Gross, Mrs. Sousa, Mrs. West, Mr. Jordan. This membership will allow for differentiating spelling practice and instruction in the classroom. – $500.
- Mrs. Reagan, Mrs. Blackman, Mrs. Waller to attend the National Association of Gifted Children conference. This annual conference is to motivate, educate, and inspire teachers of gifted children. The TAG teachers plan on sharing ideas learned to general education teachers at SAE. – $972
- New die cuts for our school - full set of alphabet, special characters and roller – $1,488
- Year-long subscriptions to Writing A to Z for and Reading A to Z for Mrs. Kathy Gross (3rd grade IRR teacher). These subscriptions include downloadable books and leveled writing resources of all genres, supplemental material, worksheets, and resources for use in developing/teaching phonemic awareness, reading, and reading comprehension, fluency, the alphabet, and vocabulary. – $84
- 10 Wordly Wise books for 5th grade teacher Mrs. Mika. These books will be used to challenge students who have already mastered 5th grade spelling words. – $96
- Marie Potter (North Metro Adaptive Arts specialist) to attend the Georgia Art Education conference – $110
- North Metro t-shirts to be worn by students and teachers for safety reasons during Community Based Instruction and Field Trip activities. – $377.72
- 3rd grade teacher Angela Wilson to attend the Georgia Educational Technology. This conference is for educators who have a vested interest in using technology within the classroom to continue student engagement and differentiated instruction. – $155
August Approved Mini Grants
- Student spelling dictionaries “Words I Use When I Write” for all first grade students – $218.90
- A complete Wii system for our P.E. department to be used during their fitness and dance units. The Wii system promotes the physical movement of your body, allowing all muscle groups to be used. It is a Fulton County approved program. Some of the games purchased were “Just Dance”, “Dance Workout”, and “Wii Sports”. – $696.83
