ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB
It’s official, the environmental club is back for the 2009 – 2010 school year! Membership in the club is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
Students will actively engage in projects learning about reuse and recycling of everyday products and how to incorporate into everyday
life. Students will participate in research on various topics and programs and will prepare presentations as necessary to gain acceptance
for implementation of specific programs. Students will also collaborate on community and school events to raise awareness
of recycling and complete specific recycling efforts. If you have questions about the club, please email Kim Dwoskin at dwoskinkim@clear.net.

  OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
We are looking forward to another year of learning in the Outdoor Classroom. Volunteers have added new mulch
and cleaned up the weeds and overgrown plants. We will continue with the curriculum that was developed for stations
last year. Kindergarten will plant vegetables in a box garden as well as plant a tree to celebrate Earth Day. First and
Second graders will plant some seeds as they learn about plant growth. We have a butterfly area for second grade to
observe monarchs and swallowtails developing from caterpillars to adults. Third grade will be digging for real fossils
in the archeological dig and then discovering what organism the fossil is. Fourth grade is planning some weather
observation and ecology activities. Fifth grade will use the plant boxes to observe erosion. They will also be microbiologists
as they observe the helpful microorganisms found in the compost bin. The fifth graders will stain the organisms and look
under the microscope to see bacteria and worms that are helping break down the organic material in the compost bin.
The Outdoor Classroom also has a sensory garden for the students to see, smell and touch some interesting plants. Our plan
is to add a rain garden and native Georgia plants area for the students to enjoy. We would also like to purchase a rain barrel
in order to show water conservation to the students. The Outdoor Classroom has stations that have labs that follow the
curriculum in order to bring the students a hands-on experience and an opportunity to see science in nature. We are eager
to see the students outside again this year!
Below are some general Outdoor Classroom pictures and also some pictures from the big clean-up held on September 19th!
